New Engine Room for Truly Classic Hoek Design 70ft ‘KIM’

We are very pleased to welcome the 70 ft Truly Classic Hoek Design ‘Kim’ back to our shipyard. In 2017, we renewed the teak deck and performed an exterior refit (see project). For the new owner, we will completely rebuild and reorganize the engine room this summer to make it more accessible and easier to operate. Additionally, we will carry out various maintenance and renovation work on the interior and exterior. Sailing yachts like the ‘KIM’, built in 1991, should always look well-cared-for from top to bottom; something our team is more than happy to do! In this article, we will regularly provide updates on the status.

Over the past few weeks, we have made significant progress. We thoroughly cleaned the contaminated and corroded diesel and wastewater tanks. The engine room was completely overhauled, including the transformation of the aft cabin into a walk-in engine room with a watertight and fireproof door. Additionally, we installed a brand-new lithium LiFePo4 Victron battery system, including chargers, and fully upgraded the existing electrical system. The ship is now also equipped with a modern induction cooktop.

Alongside these upgrades, we carried out comprehensive maintenance. Corroded hull plates were removed and replaced with newly welded ones. The existing clear lacquer system was removed and replaced with a durable 2-component coating, as seen on the cap rail. Sections of the teak deck were renewed, and the entire hull was treated for rust. Furthermore, the propeller shaft system was replaced, the propeller balanced, the steering system serviced, and the rudder bearings renewed.

The main engine has been removed and sent for servicing. All worn-out components in the engine room have been taken out, and the watertight bulkhead that originally separated the engine room from the portside berth has been removed. Additionally, the propeller shaft system has been serviced, and the steering system is being renovated.

The next step is to remove any rust in the engine room, followed by repainting and insulating the space. A new watertight bulkhead and door will be installed, after which new components, including the engine and generator, can be reinstalled.

Finally, all tanks, including the diesel tank, will be cleaned to ensure everything is in top condition.

June 2024

After the sailboat arrived at our marina following the long journey, the masts were first dismantled. Ready for lifting and then to be driven into our shipyard.

Currently, the project preparation is in full swing. All storage areas, water tanks, and diesel tanks are being emptied. Additionally, all vulnerable parts are being taped off, as well as the walkways, to prevent extra wear on the teak deck.

The chronological project plan is ready. In the next step, the engine and generator will be removed. The generator will be renewed, and the engine serviced. In short, the current engine room is being prepared for renovation; the next steps will follow soon!

The ‘KIM’ was transported from its current location in Barcelona to Makkum on board the Starclass Yacht transport. A very pleasant company to work with and with whom we have shipped several sailing yachts. After arriving in the port of Rotterdam, our regular skipper, Martin Monkel, together with Jelle and Wietse Hutting, sailed the yacht back to Makkum. Here, all preparations have been made to start the work as quickly as possible.
